Title: Dig
Author: Moi, with a little help from Brandon Boyd
Genre: Short, fluffy-ish with a little angst
Rating: G
Pairings?: none
Disclaimer: I don't own anything except the computer in which I typed it.
Author's Notes: I love Incubus way too much, and this song just sort of fits. Not beta'd, just a short for my enjoyment. It's a Who fic, if you need to know.
We all have a weakness
But some of ours are easier to identify.
Look me in the eye
And ask for forgiveness;
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again
Yes you are my friend.
We all have something that digs at us,
At least we dig each other
So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on the me from yesterday
If I turn into another
Dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me
Sing this song
Remind me that we'll always have each other
When everything else is gone.
~ Dig ~ Incubus ~
“Why can’t you just tell me?”
“It’s not something you need to know”
“So? I want to know more about you.”
“But you don’t need to know anything about me”
“Why are you so scared?”
“Why do you keep pushing this, Rose?”
“If you don’t tell anyone anything, no one can get in”
“Exactly”
“Then you deserve to be alone.”
His eyes instantly darkened. She knew as soon as the words left her mouth that it was a mistake, but they were already out there, she couldn’t take it back. The world froze around them, neither one daring to move or even speak. She couldn’t breath. He wouldn’t look away. She mustered up all her will and looked him in the eye. What she saw there was too much for her human brain to comprehend. Anger, obviously, and hurt, but she didn’t expect defeat. He looked genuinely tired, done with life. Rose wanted to run as far away as she could, so she did. Out of the console room, anywhere but here.
All he wanted to do was drop her in the next black hole they find. Who was she to judge him? She didn’t know anything about him at all. But that was the thing, wasn’t it? She knew him better than he wanted to admit. She knew he was in pain and all she wanted to do was relieve him of it. She had gotten under his skin and now she was running from the room, taking part of him with her.
He deflated onto the floor. She couldn’t understand. Her human brain wouldn’t comprehend losing everyone and everything.
“Even I don’t believe that” he said to himself. After all, he had shown her the destruction of her home, the death of her father, she had left everyone she cared about, and for what? For him. She chose to leave her world. She was just as alone as he was, just as scared, just as flawed.
Rose had found her room and sat on the bed. The tears started to sting behind her eyes. She had lost him forever. He was never going to trust her ever again. She knew that was the one subject her would never go into, so why did she have to push it? Now she was going to pay. He was going to drop her off in London and never look back. He was going to leave her and that thought is what broke her. The tears were streaming down her face and she couldn’t catch her breath.
The Doctor stood in her doorway watching the scene in front of him. She was in his head, feeling his pain.
“The skies are burnt orange…”
Rose jumped up and gasped. They faced each other, the tension in the room back to the level of before. Neither wanted to be the first to start, but both wanted to get it all out. Rose swallowed hard.
“I’m so sorry”
“No one deserves to be alone” he said. Rose silently nodded. The tear on her face broke what was left of his hearts even more. He crossed the room in two steps and stood in front of her. He reached down and softly wiped away the tears. He tilted her head up and made her look him in the eye.
“Promise me you’ll never say that again”
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, “Never again.”
The Doctor gave her a small smile and all his youth came rushing back. He pulled her to him and held her to him, her arms snaking around his torso.
“We’ll never be alone, as long as we have each other.”
